Routine Health Checks

Dogs age much faster than we do, making annual (or twice-yearly for seniors) health checks one of the most valuable things you can do for them.

During a wellness examination, your veterinarian will assess your dog’s overall health and screen for early signs of disease before they become serious.

A routine health check includes assessment of:

  • Weight and body condition
  • Heart and lungs
  • Teeth and gums
  • Skin and coat
  • Eyes and ears
  • Mobility and arthritis
  • Lumps and bumps
  • Kidney health
  • General wellbeing

Helping Dogs Age Well

Many diseases develop gradually, meaning your dog may appear “just slower” when they are actually living with pain or illness.

Early diagnosis often means better treatment options and improved quality of life.

Arthritis & Mobility

Arthritis is one of the most common conditions affecting older dogs, but it doesn’t have to mean slowing down.

We offer comprehensive arthritis management including:

  • Pain relief medications
  • Joint supplements
  • Weight management
  • Exercise advice
  • Rehabilitation through The Rehab Vet
  • Surgical options where appropriate

Heart Disease

Heart disease is common in ageing dogs and some breeds are predisposed.

Signs may include:

  • Reduced exercise tolerance
  • Persistent cough
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Weakness
  • Collapse
  • Blue or pale gums

Regular examinations allow us to detect heart murmurs early and recommend further testing if needed.

Lumps and Bumps

Not every lump is serious—but every lump deserves to be checked.

We can often perform a simple needle sample (fine needle aspirate) during your consultation to help determine the next steps.

Early diagnosis often means simpler surgery and better outcomes.

Kidney Disease

Kidney disease is another common condition in senior dogs.

Routine blood and urine testing allows us to detect kidney disease before symptoms become severe, helping us manage the condition earlier.

Dental Care

Good dental health is essential to your dog’s overall wellbeing, thats why every health check includes an oral examination.

We provide professional dental cleaning, dental X-rays and tooth extractions under general anaesthetic.

We’ll also recommend home care options and if required specialised diets to help keep teeth cleaner for longer.

Senior Dog Health Screening

Once your dog reaches around 8 years of age, we recommend annual blood and urine testing.

These simple tests help us:

  • Detect disease before symptoms appear
  • Establish normal baseline values
  • Monitor changes over time
  • Tailor healthcare to your dog’s individual needs

Early detection often means more treatment options and a better quality of life.
