Your Pet’s Final Journey – A Gentle Goodbye
Saying goodbye to a beloved pet is one of the hardest decisions a pet owner will ever face. At Vet Services Hawkes Bay, we understand just how emotional this time can be. Many of us have been through it ourselves, and we’re here to support you with compassion, care, and understanding.
Whether this is your first time facing pet euthanasia or not, knowing what to expect can help make the process a little less overwhelming. Our goal is to make this final journey as calm and gentle as possible—for you, your pet, and your family
Before the Day Comes
Making decisions in advance can help ease stress during an already difficult time. We recommend going through these common questions and decisions with your loved ones to make choices that feel right for you:
Do you want to stay with your pet during the procedure?
Would you like to bury your pet at home?
Would you prefer cremation—and what type of remembrance would you like? There are a number of urns, scatter boxes and keepsakes available.
Would you like us to take care of your pet’s remains?
Do you need help with the consent form or have any additional questions?
You’re not alone in this. Please don’t hesitate to give us a call and to speak with one of our friendly staff – we’re here to guide you through every step.
What to Expect on the Day
When you arrive at our clinic, we’ll bring you to a private consultation room to ensure peace and privacy. Your vet will meet with you to talk through the procedure and answer any questions. A consent form will need to be signed—this can also be done ahead of time if preferred.
If you choose not to be present, one of our caring veterinary nurses will stay with your pet, offering love and comfort right until the end—treating them as one of our own.
You are welcome to stay at the clinic afterwards for as long as you need. We always have a warm cup of tea and a quiet space for you to gather your thoughts.
Ready to Take the Next Step?
If you feel prepared to make these decisions, you’re welcome to complete our online form. This allows you to take your time, consider your options in a quiet moment, and ensure everything is in place when the time comes.
Once we receive your form, a member of our friendly and compassionate team will give you a call to:
Confirm a suitable date and time
Discuss the details you’ve selected
Go over any final questions
Provide a clear understanding of the cost
We’re here to support you with kindness, patience, and respect—every step of the way.
Grief Support
Grieving is deeply personal, and there’s no right or wrong way to feel. If you or your family need someone to talk to, we can recommend pet loss counselling services to help you navigate this difficult time.
Pets and People is a national hotline available to New Zealand callers on 0800 114 421.
The hotline is serviced by qualified and experienced counsellors who are able to support you through the loss of any kind of companion animal. If a client would prefer, they are also able to set up a face-to-face meeting with a counsellor in their price range, or access the complimentary services Pets & People has to offer.
