Flea products – What’s out there now?

It seems like companies are bringing out new flea products every few months these days, and even we find it hard to keep up! Here is an overview of the products we have in store.

Bravecto – This is available as a spot on treatment for cats and a tasty tablet for dogs – it provides 3 months protection (superior to the older spot ons, which generally last between 4-6 weeks depending on the product). This is great for cats and dogs that suffer from flea allergies and for those dogs you just can’t keep out of the water long enough to prevent the spot on being washed off. Bravecto also is used to treat mange – your vet may recommend this product over your standard “older” flea treatment products for this reason. Bravecto is now also out in a spot on for dogs with 6 month duration of protection! Safe to use in animals over 8 weeks of age.

Nexguard – Nexguard is another chewable tablet for dogs – useful for those dogs that you can’t get to stay dry for more than 48hrs after a spot on application. This tablet lasts 4 weeks, so is a good affordable routine treatment product to use. Safe to use in animals over 8 weeks of age.

Seresto collar – This new style flea collar is available for both cats and dogs. It lasts for 8 months and is still effective when dogs get wet. This is the ideal option for cats and dogs with flea allergies as the one collar protects for the worst of the flea season without needing any additional treatments. The seresto collar is cheaper than doing monthly dosing of nexguard (for example) for the equivalent 8 month duration, so not only more convenient, but more cost effective. These collars have scientific data to back up their efficacy and unlike your standard flea collar (which we don’t recommend for effective flea control) these are as effective as any other spot on or oral treatment product. These collars have the active ingredient embedded within the collar itself so it will not rub off on your hands or your children! Safe to use in animals over 8 weeks of age.

Frontline spray – This product has been around for a while, but is the safest one to use on puppies and kittens. Frontline spray is the only product we have available that is safe to use from 2 days of age. It is a topical spray and the amount put on is determined by the body weight (instructions on the label) – so ensure an accurate weight of your pup/kitten before spraying away.

Frontline spot on – Everyone is familiar with this product. Available for both cats and dogs, it is a topical spot on treatment lasting 6-8 weeks.

Advantage - This is your cheapest flea treatment and gives 4 weeks protection. Despite being the cheapest it works very well and is a good option for routine de-fleaing. Safe to use in puppies and kittens over 8 weeks of age.

Advocate – This product is very similar to Advantage (offers the same 4 week flea protection duration), but with added Moxidectin in it. The moxidectin extends its protection to cover internal parasites, such as lung worm in cats (for those cats that are big on hunting) as well as for ear mites and other skin mites that cause mange in both cats and dogs. Safe in puppies over 7 weeks and kittens over 9 weeks of age.
